What is a road freight removal?

A road freight removal transports your furniture and personal belongings by vehicle between your collection and delivery addresses. Depending on the route, the journey may also include a ferry or Channel crossing.

For a household move, transport is only part of the job. Suitable packing, an accurate inventory, vehicle access and delivery arrangements all need to work together.

This page explains how the transport is planned. For destination information, explore our European removals services.

Shared-load or dedicated road transport?

The right option depends on how much you are moving, your budget and how flexible you can be with collection and delivery dates.

Shared-load or part-load removals

Your belongings travel alongside other customers’ shipments on a shared vehicle. This can be a cost-effective option for smaller moves when your dates are flexible.

  • Vehicle space: Your shipment occupies part of the available load space.

  • Pricing: Based on your shipment volume and service requirements, subject to minimum charges.

  • Collection and delivery: Scheduled around the combined route and available capacity.

  • Timing: A delivery window is usually required rather than an exact arrival date.

Dedicated removals

Vehicle capacity is reserved for your move as agreed in your quotation. This may suit a larger household move or a move that needs closer control over scheduling.

  • Vehicle space: Capacity is reserved for your shipment.

  • Pricing: Based on the reserved vehicle capacity, route and services required.

  • Collection and delivery: Arrangements can be tailored more closely to your requirements.

  • Timing: Specific dates may be possible, subject to availability and written confirmation.

A dedicated service is still subject to customs clearance, ferry or Channel crossing schedules and property-access restrictions. If you need delivery on a particular day, tell us before accepting your quotation so we can assess the options and confirm what is possible.

How your road removal works

1. Tell us what you are moving

Send an inventory or arrange a survey. Include furniture, cartons, garage contents and anything unusually large, heavy or fragile. Let us know if goods are being collected from storage or more than one address.

A video survey helps us understand the shipment and identify items that need additional preparation.

2. Agree the scope and quotation

Your quotation should set out the volume allowance, transport option, packing requirements and delivery arrangements. Check any assumptions about stairs, lifts, parking and distance from the vehicle to the property.

Mention possible additions before booking. More goods can affect the space, crew time and materials required.

3. Prepare the goods and paperwork

We guide you through the documents requested for your move. Requirements depend on the destination, the goods and your circumstances.

Where packing is included, the crew prepares the agreed items for transport. Point out fragile surfaces, existing damage and furniture that needs dismantling. Bespoke crates or specialist handling must be arranged in advance.

4. Collection and transport

Your goods are collected and moved through the agreed transport plan. On a shared-load service, collection and international departure may take place on different dates.

Your move coordinator will explain the expected arrangements and update you when scheduling information is confirmed.

5. Delivery to your new home

Before delivery, confirm that keys, parking and building access are ready. Make sure someone authorised can receive the shipment.

Placement, unpacking, reassembly and packing-material removal depend on the service booked. Confirm these details in advance so the crew and time allowance match your needs.

What affects the cost of a road removal?

The cost of moving household goods by road depends on the space you need and the work involved. Even two moves to the same town can have different prices.

Shipment volume
The amount of furniture and belongings you take determines how much transport space is required.

Collection and destination
The distance, route and location of both properties influence transport arrangements and costs.

Packing and preparation
Fragile items, furniture dismantling and bespoke wooden crates may require additional labour and materials.

Property access
Stairs, long carrying distances, limited parking and vehicle restrictions can increase handling time or require a smaller transfer vehicle.

Delivery flexibility
Flexible dates can provide more transport options. A specific delivery date may require a different service, subject to availability.

Storage requirements
If your collection and delivery dates do not align, you may need storage. Storage, additional handling and later delivery charges may apply.

Customs arrangements
Documentation, clearance requirements and possible charges depend on your destination and individual circumstances.

For smaller shipments, minimum charges and fixed costs still apply. Removing one item will not necessarily reduce the price by the

same proportion.

Your quotation should clearly explain what is included, what is excluded and when additional charges may apply.

Vehicle access: a detail that can change the plan

A larger removal vehicle may not be able to stop directly outside your property. Identifying restrictions early helps us assess whether a smaller transfer vehicle, extra handling or a different parking arrangement is needed.

Please tell us about:

  • Narrow streets, low bridges, gates or height barriers.

  • Parking restrictions and any permit arrangements.

  • Apartment floors, lift dimensions and stair access.

  • The carrying distance between the vehicle and your entrance.

  • Building delivery hours or loading-area booking requirements.

  • Oversized furniture that may not fit through doors or stairwells.

Photos or a short access video can help. Customers should arrange any necessary permissions with their building management or concierge and share the requirements before the move.

Packing furniture for a European road move

Good preparation helps protect furniture during handling and transport. Agree which items Reloux will pack and which, if any, you intend to pack yourself.

Draw attention to glass, stone or ceramic surfaces, artwork, mirrors and delicate furniture. Some items may require a bespoke crate or specialist preparation with additional lead time.

Do not assume every piece can be dismantled and reassembled as a standard task. Explain any fitted, complex or unusually heavy furniture during the survey so the appropriate service can be assessed.

Keep passports, keys, essential medicines and other items you need during the journey with you.

Customs arrangements and shipment protection

Customs requirements vary by destination and personal circumstances. Reloux will guide you through the paperwork requested for your booking and coordinate with the relevant clearance team.

Do not assume that used household goods automatically qualify for duty-free entry. Any relief depends on the applicable conditions and supporting evidence. Confirm whether customs-related charges, duties or taxes are included or excluded in your quotation.

Shipment protection should also be considered separately. Ask about the available MoveProtect option, declared values, eligibility, exclusions and any effect of owner packing or storage. Do not assume cover is automatically included in the transport price.

If your home is not ready for delivery

A delayed completion date or tenancy start can affect the whole move. Tell your coordinator as soon as you become aware of a change.

Storage may provide an alternative, subject to location, availability and charges. Where possible, agree it before dispatch. Moving goods into storage can involve handling, storage and later delivery costs.

For shared-load moves, avoid relying on an unconfirmed arrival date when booking flights, taking leave or arranging building access.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send only a few items of furniture to Europe?

Yes, a part-load service may suit a smaller shipment, subject to route availability and acceptance of the items. Minimum charges still apply because collection, handling, paperwork and delivery involve fixed work. Send the item list, dimensions and addresses for an assessment.

Is shared-load transport the same as groupage?

In household road removals, these terms commonly describe shipments from several customers travelling on a shared vehicle. Ask how your particular move will be handled, including any warehouse transfers and the expected delivery window.

Will the same vehicle collect and deliver my belongings?

Not necessarily. Depending on the route and access, local collection or delivery may use a different vehicle from the main international transport. Ask your coordinator to explain the arrangements, especially if either address has restricted access.

How long does a road removal from the UK to Europe take?

The timeframe depends on the destination, transport option, route schedule, customs clearance and access arrangements. A shared-load service needs flexibility around the combined route. Request an estimate for your specific move and distinguish collection date, departure date and delivery window.

Can I book an exact delivery date?

Tell us the date you need before booking. A dedicated option may offer more scheduling flexibility, but any specific commitment must be confirmed in writing. A preferred date is not automatically a guaranteed delivery appointment.

Is packing included in the road removal price?

Your quotation will specify the packing service included. Make sure it reflects the items you want professionally packed, any dismantling and any specialist crates. Additional work identified later may require a revised quotation.

Can I add items after receiving my quote?

Please tell us before collection. We will assess the extra volume, packing and vehicle space, then confirm any change to the arrangements or price. Additional items cannot be assumed to fit within the original booking.

What if a removal truck cannot reach my address?

A smaller transfer vehicle or another access solution may be required. Send photographs and details of restrictions before booking so we can assess feasibility and any additional charges.

Are customs clearance, duties and taxes included?

Check the inclusions and exclusions in your quotation. Clearance assistance does not necessarily include duties, taxes, inspections or other third-party charges. Your coordinator can explain the arrangements for your destination and circumstances.

Can you collect from a storage unit?

Collection from storage can be assessed for your route. Provide the unit location, contents, access hours and any vehicle restrictions. Confirm how the crew will gain access and whether the items need repacking before transport.

What happens if I cannot accept delivery?

Contact your coordinator immediately. Alternative dates or storage may be possible, subject to availability and cost. Do not assume a shared vehicle can hold your shipment indefinitely while other deliveries continue.

Is insurance automatically included?

Do not assume it is. Ask about MoveProtect and review the applicable terms before collection. Any available cover depends on the agreed protection, declared values, eligibility and exclusions.

Plan your road removal with Reloux

You do not need to know your exact shipment volume before contacting us. A list of the main items and a few details about your properties are a useful starting point.

Share your UK collection postcode, destination address or town, preferred dates and any access concerns. We will help you assess the transport options and prepare a quotation for the service you need.
