Moving from the UK to the USA: What Are My Household-Goods Shipping Options?

Moving from the UK to the USA brings plenty of decisions, including one practical question: what is the best way to ship your furniture, household goods and personal belongings to your new home? Whether you are sending a few boxes to New York, moving an apartment to Florida or relocating a family home to California, the right shipping option depends on your shipment size, budget, delivery address and how quickly you need your belongings.

There are four main options for shipping household goods from the UK to the USA: sole-use containers, groupage shared containers, LCL sea freight and air freight. A sole-use 20ft, 40ft or 40ft high-cube container generally suits larger household moves. Groupage is often a cost-effective choice for smaller shipments, while air freight suits urgent personal effects. LCL also uses shared container space, but its service arrangements and destination charges can differ significantly from a removal-company groupage service.

Moving from the UK to the USA

When comparing UK-to-USA removals, look beyond the initial shipping price. Export packing, customs-clearance support, destination handling and delivery to your home all influence the total cost. Your destination matters too: a move to the East Coast can involve a different route and timetable from a shipment to the West Coast or an inland city such as Chicago, Dallas or Denver.

This guide explains how each shipping option works, the differences between groupage and LCL, when a dedicated container becomes better value, and what to consider when comparing costs and estimated delivery times, so you can choose a service that fits your move.

Finding the right shipping option for your move

Moving your belongings to the USA starts with understanding how much you want to take, when you need it and which services matter most to you. For some households, sharing a container offers the best balance of cost and convenience. For others, a sole-use container or a small air shipment may be more suitable.

If you are still comparing options, Reloux® can help assess your shipment through a free video survey and explain the services available for your destination. You can then review the costs, estimated timings and inclusions before deciding what works for your move.

The information in this guide is general. Shipping schedules, customs requirements and costs vary according to your shipment and circumstances and should be confirmed before booking.

UK to USA household shipping guide

Who is this guide for?

This guide is for individuals, couples and families moving household goods from the UK to the USA, including first-time international movers, returning US residents and people relocating for work or family reasons.

Whether you are sending a few boxes, selected furniture or the contents of an entire home, it will help you compare shipping options, understand what a quotation should include and plan for delivery to an East Coast, West Coast or inland US destination.

Option 1: a sole-use shipping container

A sole-use container—also called an FCL, or Full Container Load—is reserved for one customer’s household goods. Your belongings are not consolidated in the same container with other customers’ shipments.

There are three common container choices:

20-foot container

A 20-foot container is generally suitable for a larger household shipment of up to approximately 1,050 cubic feet or 30 cubic metres, subject to the shape, density and loading requirements of the goods.

40-foot standard container

A standard 40-foot container offers considerably more space and may suit a substantial family move. The exact usable volume depends on how the furniture and cartons can be packed and stowed.

40-foot high-cube container

A 40-foot high-cube container is taller than a standard 40-foot container and is often chosen for a large household move. It provides roughly 2,350 cubic feet or around 65–67 cubic metres of practical household-goods capacity, depending on the shipment and packing method.

When is a sole-use container the best choice?

It normally makes the most sense when your shipment fills, or comes close to filling, the selected container. Because the entire container is allocated to you, you do not need to wait for other customers’ consignments to be consolidated before dispatch.

The main advantages are:

  • Faster dispatch than groupage in many cases

  • Fewer consolidation stages

  • Exclusive use of the container

  • Better value per cubic metre for a large shipment

  • More predictable routing and scheduling

If your goods occupy more than half—and especially around 70–75%—of a container, it is worth comparing a sole-use quotation with groupage. There is no universal cut-off: freight rates, destination, access and the shipment’s packing profile can make a major difference.

However, once the two prices become similar, sole use will often provide better speed and value.

Subject to safe access, the container may sometimes be positioned at the collection address. Where this is not possible, the removal crew can collect the goods in smaller vehicles and load the container at the mover’s warehouse.

Option 2: groupage or shared-container shipping

Groupage is a shared-container service organised and controlled by an international removal company or its established network.

The mover professionally packs and collects each customer’s household goods, identifies and inventories them, and consolidates several compatible shipments into one container. The container is dispatched to the mover’s partner warehouse in the USA. After arrival and customs clearance, the shipments are separated and scheduled for delivery to each customer’s new home.

Why groupage works well for household goods

With groupage, you pay for the space your own shipment occupies rather than the cost of a complete container. This usually makes it the most cost-effective sea-freight option for small and medium-sized household moves.

It also allows a door-to-door mover to manage the full chain, including:

  • Export packing and collection in the UK

  • Consolidation and ocean transport

  • Customs-clearance coordination

  • Deconsolidation at the US warehouse

  • Final delivery to the destination address

The main trade-off is time. The shipment must fit a consolidation schedule, and delivery is arranged after the shared container arrives, clears customs and is unloaded at the destination warehouse. For this reason, groupage is slower and delivery dates are less exact than with a sole-use container.

For many smaller moves, however, the saving outweighs the longer schedule. It is generally our preferred sea-freight option when a customer does not have enough goods to make a sole-use container economical.

Option 3: LCL sea freight

LCL means Less than Container Load. Although LCL and groupage both place more than one shipment in a container, they are not necessarily the same service.

Commercial LCL freight commonly moves through freight terminals or container freight stations. Charges and handling may be split among the origin forwarder, shipping line, terminal, deconsolidation warehouse, customs broker and destination agent. The destination-side provider may not be controlled by the UK removal company.

Why we generally do not recommend LCL for household goods

The difficulty is not simply the advertised ocean-freight price. Destination charges may be assessed after arrival and can include terminal handling, deconsolidation, documentation, storage, customs-broker or agent fees and onward delivery.

Some destination charges are calculated per cubic metre. Depending on the routing, provider and shipment, combined destination costs.

An LCL cost may cover the initial freight movement without including every destination service. Depending on the booking, separate charges may apply for terminal handling, deconsolidation, documentation, customs brokerage, storage and delivery to your home.

Some charges are calculated by volume, while others are fixed or subject to minimum fees. Ask for a written destination-cost breakdown before booking so you can compare the complete door-to-door price.

LCL may also involve more terminal handling and can take longer while cargo is consolidated and deconsolidated. For personal household goods, this can create three practical problems:

  • The final door-to-door cost may be difficult to establish at the outset.

  • The customer may face destination charges that were not included in the initial freight figure.

  • Responsibility for different stages may be divided among several providers.

For these reasons, we recommend comparing any LCL offer on a fully itemised door-to-door basis, not merely its port-to-port freight rate. For most small or medium UK-to-USA household shipments, a removal-company groupage service offers clearer budgeting and more coordinated handling.

air freight from UK to USA

Option 4: air freight

Air freight is the fastest option and is best suited to a small quantity of belongings that you need soon after arriving in the USA.

It can work particularly well for:

  • Approximately 20–40 cartons

  • Clothing and personal effects

  • Work equipment

  • Essential household items

  • Items needed before the main sea shipment arrives

A properly planned air shipment may arrive door to door in approximately 7–14 days, subject to flight availability, customs clearance, location and the nature of the goods.

Air freight is charged using actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater. Large but relatively light items can therefore cost much more than customers expect. Furniture, sofas and other bulky pieces are rarely economical by air unless speed is more important than cost.

Some families use a combination: essential cartons travel by air, while furniture and the rest of the household move by groupage or sole-use sea container.

How long does shipping from the UK to different parts of the USA take?

The United States is a very large destination. A quotation to New York cannot be compared directly with a delivery to California, Texas, Utah or an inland state.

The estimates below are sensible door-to-door planning ranges for sole-use sea containers, not vessel-only sailing times:

US region

Example destinations

Indicative sole-use door-to-door range*

East Coast

New York, New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC

Around 4–7 weeks

Southeast

Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida

Around 5–8 weeks

Gulf region

Houston, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans

Around 5–9 weeks

Midwest and inland

Chicago, Detroit, Ohio, Colorado and other inland destinations

Around 5–9 weeks

West Coast

Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland

Around 6–10 weeks

Remote western/inland areas

Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho and similar locations

Around 7–11 weeks

Actual timings vary by port, carrier, routing, rail or road connection, customs and final-delivery schedule. Groupage usually requires a broader planning window of approximately 8–12 weeks because consolidation and destination scheduling are added to the journey.

East Coast deliveries

New York and New Jersey are often among the quickest sea routes from the UK. The sailing itself can be much shorter than the complete move, but time must also be allowed for packing, export handling, vessel cut-off, customs clearance, port release and final delivery.

Southern and Gulf destinations

Florida, Georgia and Texas may be served through regional ports or via another US gateway followed by road or rail. The most suitable route depends on carrier schedules and the delivery postcode, not simply which port looks closest on a map.

West Coast deliveries

California, Oregon and Washington generally require longer sea transit or an intermodal journey across the United States. Deliveries to inland western states may need further rail or road transport, adding time and cost.

What should I check in my UK-to-USA moving quotation?

Before comparing prices, check that each quotation covers the same services. Ask your mover to confirm:

  • Packing: Are export packing, materials and any specialist crates included?

  • Freight: Does the price cover your chosen sea or air service?

  • Destination handling: Are unloading, warehouse handling and customs-clearance services included?

  • Home delivery: Does the quotation include delivery to your final US address and unloading into your home?

  • Access charges: Could stairs, long carrying distances, parking restrictions or a smaller shuttle vehicle cost extra?

  • Storage: What charges apply if your home is not ready or delivery is delayed?

  • Insurance or shipment protection: Is cover included or optional, and what conditions, exclusions and excess apply?

Request written confirmation of exclusions and any charges that could become payable separately. This makes it easier to compare the total cost of your move.

What can delay a UK-to-USA household shipment?

Even when the vessel sails on schedule, the total move can be affected by:

  • Customs documentation being incomplete or submitted late

  • A customs or agricultural inspection

  • Port congestion or adverse weather

  • Changes to the shipping line’s schedule

  • Groupage consolidation timing

  • Rail or road availability for inland destinations

  • Difficult property access or the need for a smaller shuttle vehicle

  • Peak moving seasons and public holidays

This is why a professional mover should provide a realistic delivery window rather than promise an exact date too early in the journey.

US customs documents for household goods

Household goods arriving separately from the owner normally require US customs documentation. CBP Form 3299, Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles, is commonly used for unaccompanied household and personal effects. Your eligibility and the documents required depend on your immigration status and circumstances.

Customers should expect to provide documents such as a passport copy, appropriate visa or proof of US status, a detailed packing inventory and customs forms. Restricted goods must be identified before packing. Your mover or customs representative should confirm the current requirements for your particular shipment.

Which shipping option should I choose?

As a simple guide:

  • Choose a sole-use container for a large or near-full-container move, particularly when speed and exclusive use matter.

  • Choose groupage for a small or medium household shipment when value and a coordinated door-to-door service are the priorities.

  • Approach LCL carefully and insist on a complete breakdown of all origin, freight, destination and delivery charges.

  • Choose air freight for a small number of urgent cartons or essential personal belongings.

The best comparison is always based on the surveyed volume, collection and delivery access, destination postcode, service level and total door-to-door cost. Comparing ocean freight alone can give a misleading picture of what the move will ultimately cost.

Understanding your shipping estimate

Port-to-port transit time covers the journey between the departure and arrival ports. Door-to-door timing also allows for collection, export handling, customs clearance, destination handling and final delivery.

For groupage, ask whether the estimate includes the wait for consolidation before departure. Confirm the starting point of your quoted timeframe with your mover: collection, receipt at the warehouse and vessel departure are different dates.

The vessel’s estimated arrival date is not your home-delivery date. Final delivery depends on customs release and the destination delivery schedule.

Frequently asked questions about shipping household goods from the UK to the USA

What is the cheapest way to ship household goods from the UK to the USA?

Groupage shipping is often the most economical option for small to medium-sized household shipments. Your belongings share a container with other customers’ goods, so you pay for the space your shipment occupies rather than an entire container.

For larger moves, a sole-use container can offer better value. Always compare the total door-to-door cost, including packing, collection, destination handling and delivery, rather than the ocean-freight price alone.

What is the difference between groupage and LCL shipping?

Groupage and LCL both involve sharing container space, but the way the service is organised can differ.

Household-goods groupage is generally managed as a coordinated removal service, with packing, collection, shipping and destination delivery arranged through the mover’s network. Commercial LCL often operates through freight terminals, with handling, customs brokerage and delivery potentially charged separately.

Terminology varies between providers, so ask what the quotation includes and who is responsible for each stage. The service arrangements matter more than the label.

Why does Reloux recommend groupage rather than LCL for smaller household shipments?

Reloux® recommends groupage for many smaller UK-to-USA household moves because it allows collection, shipping, destination handling and delivery to be coordinated through established removal partners. This makes the service easier to manage and the expected costs clearer before departure.

An LCL quotation may initially look cheaper but exclude destination charges or home delivery. Before booking, request a written breakdown of all included services, exclusions and charges that could become payable after arrival.

When should I choose a sole-use container instead of groupage?

A sole-use container is worth considering when you are moving a substantial amount of furniture and household goods, or when avoiding the wait for groupage consolidation is a priority.

If your shipment occupies more than half of a suitable container, ask for both options to be priced. As the volume approaches a full load, the difference in cost may narrow. There is no fixed percentage at which sole use becomes cheaper: the destination, freight rate, packing requirements and delivery arrangements all influence the comparison.

Should I book a 20ft, 40ft or 40ft high-cube container for my move to the USA?

Choose the container according to the assessed volume and dimensions of your packed belongings. A 20ft container suits a smaller full-container move, while a 40ft container provides considerably more space. A 40ft high-cube container offers additional height for larger loads.

The number of bedrooms alone is not a reliable guide. Furniture size, carton quantities, protective packing and any wooden crates affect the space required. A professional survey helps establish which container can safely accommodate your shipment.

How long does it take to ship furniture and household goods from the UK to the USA?

The timeframe depends on the shipping service, departure schedule and final destination. Groupage commonly requires a planning window of around 8–12 weeks, while a sole-use container may arrive sooner because it does not need to wait for other customers’ shipments to be consolidated. Small air-freight consignments may take approximately 7–14 days door to door.

These are indicative estimates, not guaranteed delivery periods. Ask whether the quoted timeframe starts from collection, warehouse receipt or vessel departure, as these are different stages of the move.

Does shipping to the US East Coast take less time than shipping to the West Coast?

Shipping from the UK to the East Coast generally involves a shorter sea journey than shipping to the West Coast. However, the complete delivery time also depends on the selected sailing, customs clearance and transport from the arrival port or warehouse to your home.

A move to New York or New Jersey may follow a different schedule from a delivery to Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle. Inland destinations such as Chicago, Denver or Salt Lake City require additional transport, so provide your full delivery postcode when requesting an estimate.

Is air freight a good option for shipping boxes to the USA?

Air freight suits small, urgent shipments of personal belongings, such as clothing, work essentials and items you need shortly after arrival.

The price depends on both weight and package dimensions, so the number of boxes alone does not establish the cost. Large cartons and bulky furniture can be expensive to send by air, even when relatively light. Compare air and sea options if your delivery schedule is flexible.

Can I send essential belongings by air and my furniture by sea?

Yes. Splitting your move can provide a practical balance between speed and cost. You can send essential personal effects by air and transport furniture, books and less urgent belongings by groupage or sole-use container.

Ask for separate quotations and shipment inventories so you understand the cost, paperwork and estimated arrival window for each consignment.

What should a door-to-door UK-to-USA removals quotation include?

A quotation should clearly identify the collection and delivery addresses, shipment volume, transport method and services included at each end.

Check whether the price covers export packing, loading, ocean or air freight, customs-clearance support, destination handling and delivery into your home. Also confirm whether unpacking, furniture reassembly, insurance or shipment protection, storage and access-related services are included or charged separately.

“Door to door” does not automatically mean every possible charge is covered.

Can there be additional charges when my belongings arrive in the USA?

Yes, depending on the quotation and circumstances. Possible additional costs include customs inspections, storage, duties or taxes where applicable, and extra delivery services needed because of access restrictions.

For example, a smaller shuttle vehicle may be required if a container truck cannot reach your property. Supplying accurate access information and checking exclusions before booking helps reduce unexpected costs. Even a comprehensive quotation should explain which exceptional charges remain outside the agreed price.

Will the shipping container be delivered directly to my new home?

This depends on your service and property access. A sole-use container may be delivered directly where the road, parking and unloading conditions allow. Otherwise, the goods may be transferred to smaller delivery vehicles.

With groupage, the shared container is normally unloaded at a destination warehouse, and your individual shipment is then scheduled for delivery. Tell your mover about narrow roads, apartment buildings, stairs, lift bookings and parking restrictions before the quotation is finalised.

Are UK-to-USA shipping and delivery times guaranteed?

International removal timeframes are normally estimates unless a specific guarantee is expressly included in your contract. Vessel changes, customs inspections, port conditions and inland transport availability can affect arrival and delivery.

A vessel’s arrival date is not your home-delivery date. Your shipment must still be released and, where applicable, transferred to a warehouse before final delivery can be arranged.

How can I get an accurate quote for moving my belongings to the USA?

Start with a detailed inventory or a video survey, and provide your collection address, US delivery postcode, preferred moving dates and any access restrictions. Mention items requiring specialist packing, storage or urgent delivery.

Reloux® can assess your shipment and compare suitable groupage, sole-use container and air-freight options, helping you understand the expected cost, service inclusions and delivery window before booking.
